Life is a series of moments

Life is a series of moments. Time moving forward relentlessly, minute by minute, day by day.

Many go by unnoticed.

Then suddenly one moment jumps out. An observation made. Sudden clarity. A conversation that leaves a mark. A song that will forever conjure up place, time and circumstance.

Moments can be monumental or miniscule.

Moments can be holy.

A life well lived is a life full of moments that add up to impact and legacy.

A friend forwarded on a devotional from Matthew Kelly that speaks to this better than I can today:

There's a great quote that's attributed to Francis of Assisi that says, “First do what is necessary, then do what is possible, and before long you will find yourself doing the impossible.”

Francis of Assisi is a great example of a guy who created a lot of Holy Moments. And I think it's important to point out that one of the things about holiness is that it’s beautifully attractive, it's incredibly attractive. And everyone loves Francis, not just Christians. Christians and non-Christians, men and women of great faith, men and women of no faith love Francis of Assisi. And I think the reason is because there's nothing more attractive than holiness.

And you'll see that by creating a Holy Moment here, and a Holy Moment there, that there's something beautifully attractive about those Holy Moments. And as those Holy Moments add up, as those Holy Moments pile up in your life, our lives become attractive to people, and people become curious—“Well, what is it that makes you that way?” And that becomes a great moment of conversation, a great moment of collaboration, a great opportunity to talk to people about our life of faith, and our journey of faith, and how God is working in our lives, and how we've walked with God, and how we've walked away from God.

Holy moments.

I long for my life to be a series of holy moments, but if I'm honest, the daily routine of life doesn't often feel very holy. The fulfilling of the task list, the meetings with clients, the endless emails that define each day.

But I know better. I know that every moment matters in the scope of a life well lived. Seen or unseen, each moment is shaping our lives, our character, our offering to the world around us. The daily routines are our training ground. The soil in which we cultivate who we are and who we are becoming.

What if I live more intentionally? What if I try to recognize that every part of my life matters and that every action, done with the right attitude, can be holy? That in living we find ourselves with opportunities, moments where we interact in ways that can help shape the perspective of another. Some of the best of those in my life have been unplanned, yet profound.

Life is indeed a series of moments. May we be given the gift of seeing each moment as holy.
